Have Your Payments Been Stopped

If your Child Benefit payments have stopped or decreased then there could be several reasons for this:

  • Lack of Response – If the HMRC have written to you and you don’t reply to the original letter or any of the subsequent reminders, they are Likely to stop your Child Benefit payment because they are unsure about your whereabouts.
  • If your child has turned 16 – In the school year where your child turns 16 the HMRC will contact you to find out if they’re going to carry on in education or training. If they are, you will be asked to give the date you expect them to leave. If you do not respond to the letter or if inform the HMRC that your child isn’t going to carry on in the relevant education and training then your Child Benefit payment will stop on the first Monday of September
  • If your bank account details have changed – If you’ve recently changed the details of the account we pay your Child Benefit into and you haven’t informed the HMRC, your payment will be sent to your old account.
  • If you've recently moved house – If you have moved house and haven't told the HMRC your new address, they may stop your Child Benefit payments because they can't contact you.
  • If your Child has gone into care – The HMRC may still pay Child Benefit for the first eight weeks in a row that your child’s in care. After that, your payments may stop.
  • If your child now lives with someone else – If the person who your child lives with decides to claim for Child Benefit your payment may be suspended until it is clear who is entitled to the money

If you haven't had your payment and your circumstances haven't changed or your child isn't aged 16 or over, it is worth checking with your bank, building society or Post Office to see if there is a simple explanation.
